FAQs
Below are answers to commonly asked questions. Deciding to seek counselling can take time so please feel free to reach out by email, phone or by using the contact form. I would be glad to answer any further questions or concerns you may have.
What can I expect at my first session?
When you book your first appointment, you’ll receive a brief intake form along with a privacy policy statement and informed consent information. Completing these forms will ensure we can use our time together effectively. The first session will be an opportunity for you to speak about what led you to seek counselling and what you’d like to achieve through counselling. It is also an opportunity for me to explain more about how I work and how I can best support you.
What can I expect during regular sessions?
In each session, I work collaboratively with you to allow you to talk about your thoughts, feelings and experiences. I may provide observations or questions to help you clarify your perspective and find a deeper understanding of issues. My approach is empathic, non-judgemental and trauma-informed. I listen actively and help you to process your thoughts and experiences. I guide you to process difficult emotions, let go of the past and become more focused on how you’d like to show up for your life.
How many appointments will I need?
I recommend coming to counselling on a weekly or fortnightly basis for at least five sessions to get the most of the counselling process. However, the number of appointments is highly personalised and based on your preferences. I will work with you to identify what you would like to achieve out of counselling and come up with an approach that suits you. Some people like to come for a once-off session to work on a specific concern, while others come for regular sessions over a number of months or even years.
Do you accept Mental Health Treatment Plans or referrals from a GP?
I provide a discounted rate for individuals with a Mental Health Treatment Plan, however you do not need a Mental Health Treatment Plan or a referral to book an appointment. If you have a recent referral letter please email it to me before your first appointment so I can understand your needs better and determine if I can support you or refer you to another provider.
Can I get a Medicare Rebate on your services?
I provide a discounted rate for MHTPs so that your out-of-pocket expenses are lower than the out-of-pocket costs you would incur using a medicare rebate. Currently in Australia, registered counsellors are unable to provide Medicare rebates.
Are sessions covered by Private Health Insurance?
I am actively working toward further professional development and specialised training so that I can provide private health fund rebates in the future. Rebates will be detailed here as they become available.
How do I pay for sessions?
I will provide you with an invoice at the end of each session with payment details due within 7 days of the appointment.
What happens if I cancel or miss a session?
Life happens and appointments are occasionally missed. Please provide as much notice as possible if you cannot attend so that I can offer the time to another person.
Not Sure Where to Start?
Book a 15 minute consult with me to explore your questions, concerns and goals and learn more about my approach to supporting you. I know choosing a therapist that feels right can take time and I’m happy to support you or recommend other therapists if this best supports your goals.
